The job of PRODUCT DESIGNER
Best known as an "object aesthetician", the Product Designer is a specialist in the creation of innovative products.
This relatively new profession still has a long way to go, as almost everything we use in our daily lives has been designed by a Product Designer. The most sought-after product design assignments today are those involving the creation of specialized products such as medical, electronic and telecommunications equipment.
The term Product Designer is rather generic, as it encompasses multiple functions of what a Product Designer can do.
Missions
- User experience (UX) design - ensures the logic of the product and seeks to improve the user experience in order to improve customer satisfaction
- Interaction design - it chooses the way a product will behave in the dialogue with a user
- User interface (UI) design - designing the aesthetic elements of the user interface
- Information Architecture (IA) - Information Architecture is about the way in which a product is structured, both the organization and the content
The skills
- The ideal Product Designer is creative, rigorous and a good communicator.
- He/she must also have a knowledge of development (HTML, CSS, JavaScript), to better communicate with developers and find a good balance between the needs of the client and those of the company.
- However, the key to success for a good Product Designer remains his ability to adapt and his desire to learn. He must enjoy teamwork and not be afraid to solve problems. Finally, the Product Designer is always aware of the latest trends.
- On a daily basis, he uses the Adobe suite (with Photoshop, InDesign, etc.), of which he has a perfect command. A good knowledge of English is also crucial.
